The Sixth Congress of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party was opened in Baku on Thursday, where it is expected that the presidential candidate from the ruling party, Ilham Aliyev, will be approved for the April 11 extraordinary elections.
Until the last moment, there had been discussions in the society that the spouse of the head of state Mehriban Aliyeva could become the candidate from the ruling party. Today’s congress has to end this talk.
Recall that the elections were scheduled for October 17, but unexpectedly on February 5, Ilham Aliyev issued a decree on holding early elections, and did not explain the reason for this. The environment of the head of state has not provided intelligible explanations either.
Isa Gambar, the former leader of the opposition Musavat Party, and two small parties, Liberal Democratic Party and Citizens and Development Party, announced their participation in the elections.
The Popular Front Party and the National Council of Democratic Forces will boycott the elections.
The election campaigning of candidates will begin on March 19.
